Evaluation Question 1-In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

For my Music Magazine I wanted to produce a magazine in the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal genre. "Kerrang" is a perfect example of this genre of magazine. "Kerrang" is published by Bauer Consumer Media and was first published on the 7th June 1981. AC/DC were the first band to be on the front cover and since then, other bands featured have included: Metallica, Foo Fighters, Slipknot and Papa Roach.
"Kerrang’s" name is onomatopoeic, as it is meant to sound like playing a power chord on an electric guitar. For my magazine, I wanted to come up with something like "Kerrang", that is also specific to this genre. Trying to think of the magazine name was very difficult and I only managed to come up with one suitable title. I called my magazine ‘Mosh’ as it is an aggressive type of dance which people do at Heavy Metal concerts/gigs.
For the layout, I wanted to try and mirror the style which "Kerrang" use but give it my own twist. I used a page-wide masthead because this is done in nearly all modern magazines. I found the font I wanted to use from ‘DaFont’. I knew the style of font that I wanted to feature, which is a big, bold text style that stands out. I also wanted the font to have a destructive feel to it so I found a font that was missing sections out of the letters.
For my model's costume, I wanted him to wear black clothing and a band t-shirt to keep the heavy metal scene going. I also wanted to have a model with longish hair. I also wanted to have my model's arms folded, as this is similar to the pose that the model from the "Kerrang" front cover is using.
For my double page spread I wanted to shoot the photos in a dark, shadowy place, with a slightly industrial look, as this is quite typical of the heavy metal genre as it shows the mood of the music to be aggressive, slightly dark and in your face.
It is typical of hard rock/ heavy metal magazines to have large bold text and big images on the front cover. I designed my front cover to have bold fonts and a large masthead that stands out and is very eye grabbing. My front cover and contents page suggest that it is a heavy metal magazine because of the red, white and black colour scheme which is usually used in magazines and albums of this genre. I chose this colour scheme because it is bold, striking and garish.

- they both have very similar postures.
- both the models are staring towards the camera in the same way.

Differences:
- an obvious difference is the age gap which is approximately 40 years.

- the Kerrang model has a goatie beard.
